FAQs

Common questions about Greece.

Yes — for Greek-taught undergraduate programmes at public universities, tuition is FREE for non-EU students (Law 4485/2017). Greek-taught postgraduate programmes often charge tuition, and non-EU students are explicitly excluded from the 30% low-income fee waiver under Law 4485/2017. You must complete a preparatory year of Modern Greek language at Athens or Thessaloniki centres first. English-taught programmes vary widely: typical range €3,000–€10,000/year, but specialised programmes (e.g. Medicine at Aristotle University ~€12,000/yr; UoA Medicine €17,000/yr) cost significantly more. Private colleges (American College of Greece, ALBA, Metropolitan) charge €4,000–€15,000/year.
€90 for the National long-stay visa (Type D) for students, paid at the Greek Embassy / GVCW in New Delhi (per mfa.gr/uk/en/services/consular-fees), plus the GVCW service charge. After arrival in Greece you pay an additional ~€150 for the 1-year residence permit (άδεια διαμονής) at the Decentralised Administration.
Critical Step: Greece mandates that all your academic documents (Degree, Transcripts) must be Apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India before admission/visa. Without this, your documents are invalid.
Non-EU students do not get an automatic post-study work visa. However, you can apply for a 'Job Search Extension' (1 Year) if you have a high-tier degree (Master's/PhD) to find work or start a business.
To get Long-Term Residence (PR), you need 5 years of legal stay. Student years count as HALF (50%). Example: 4 Year Bachelor's = 2 Years counted. You need 3 more years of work residence.
For English-taught programs, No. However, for daily life and part-time jobs (retail/cafes), basic Greek (A1/A2) is highly recommended. You also need A2 level Greek for PR later.
Yes, but with strict conditions. You must have resided in Greece for at least 2 years before applying for family reunification. You need to prove income equal to the current national minimum wage (€920/mo as of April 2026) + 20% for spouse, and adequate housing.
